VARIETY AND LENGTH OF
PROGRAMS
Although slavery has been a part of
American history and folklore for well over 150 years, the
recent past has seen an increased public interest in the
identification of historic sites associated with the
experience of fugitive slaves in New Jersey, Philadelphia and
New York.
Since the late 1960's many researchers have
utilized the perspectives and methodologies of archaeologists,
anthropologits, social historians and material to focus on the
lives and communities of enslaved and freed slaves. These
methods permit historic site administrators, historians and
members of the general public to create more meaningful and
exclusive documented accounts of the Underground Railroad, and
slavery as a whole.
It is important that local
historians in New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York supplement
oral narratives and legends of the Underground Railroad with
documentation that supports local accounts and places the
Underground Railroad in a broader context of slavery in
American history.
